Africa

Painted in: Beijing (China)

Author's comment:

Literacy avoids poverty and death.

The letters of the alphabet (each representing the initial of a country's name) describe the excessive widespread illiteracy in Africa, while the crosses make the continent appear like a cemetery. The deaths, caused by malnutrition, diseases, inter-tribal fights and wars against neighbouring countries are due to ignorance. The colours, instead, represent the innate happiness and joy of living of African people. To become a "normal" Continent, therefore, the aid given by developed countries should be invested for the cultural development of the younger generations.

Comment:

Latin America has a bloody tone, while “Africa”, painted in 2005, is enveloped by a macabre restlessness with depictions of crosses all over the continent commemorating the millions who have died from malnutrition, war and disease.  The colors used in the work are anything except macabre and they provide a tone of colorful vivacity to the work that reflects the joyous spirit of the African people.  (Dr. Sabrina Falzone)
